Jamaica Environment Trust
The Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) is a non-profit, non-governmental membership organization formed in 1991 by a group of citizens concerned for the state of Jamaica’s natural environment. JET works to protect Jamaica’s natural resources by using education, conservation, advocacy and the law to influence individual and organizational behaviour, as well as public policy and practice.
The Jamaica Environment Trust has continued to facilitate dialogue among community members, government and industry stakeholders wherever possible, in addition to following up with environmental complaints on behalf of affected communities. Their team utilizes traditional and social media platforms, among other tools, to highlight environmental issues publicly. They also engage in formal communication–by way of letters, emails, meetings, and review of official environmental documents–with government and private sector stakeholders, often demanding environmental concerns be addressed. JET also continues to submit written comments on the Environment Impact Assessment process, and to represent affected communities at public meetings with stakeholders.
Administrative Support For JET’s Law & Advocacy Programme
The Jamaica Environment Trust identified the need for institutional support to assist with its Environmental Law and Advocacy Programme (ELAW). The Jamaica Conservation Partners stepped in to provide this support, in addition to general administrative expenses associated with JET’s advocacy and legal activities that were not covered by other grant funding.
Under their ELAW Programme, JET has attended numerous public meetings, reviewed Environmental Impact Assessments, submitted hundreds of Access to Information requests, given free legal advice to communities being impacted by environmental issues and delivered campaigns for the protection of Jamaica’s natural resources.
The Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) continued its work to improve citizen engagement around environmental issues through education and advocacy. Under this phase, JCP covered administrative expenses associated with JET’s advocacy work. As part of JET’s environmental advocacy programme the organization:
1. Participated in public consultations surrounding major developments that could negatively impact the environment.
2. Reviewed Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs).
3. Used the Access to Information (ATI) Act to request and review the Jamaican Government’s environmental documents and data.
4. Responded to environmental complaints from citizens.
5. Engaged with the media, government and other stakeholders on environmental issues.
6. Provided expert advice to communities being impacted by environmental issues.
7. Reviewed the government’s environmental policy and technical documents.
8. Delivered campaigns for the protection of Jamaica’s natural resources.
